Doris Gottlieb

Doris Gottlieb has come to her work as a facilitator, trainer and coach via an eclectic route. Born and raised in the United States, her first love was theatre, and she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from Ithaca College in New York State. While taking part in a theatrical exchange program in France, she came upon what would be an enduring theme in her life and work - interest in how people communicate and work together across cultural divides. After working as the producer of a theatre program for underprivileged children in New York City, Doris obtained a M.Sc. in Mass Communication, with a specialty in Intercultural Communication at Boston University in 1989, and since that time has lived and worked in Europe, primarily in Spain and the Netherlands.

Doris worked for 10 years as a lecturer in communication and intercultural communication at the Center for International Studies in Madrid and the Institute for Higher European Studies in The Hague. In this capacity she acquired both a great deal of experience working with colleagues and students from all over the world, and working in complex organizations needing to adapt themselves to an increasingly international public.

Throughout her stay in Europe she also worked freelance in various capacities, including as a translator for Spanish television, and as part of teams organizing international events, giving her exposure to work in international environments in several different contexts.

In 1998 Doris made a career shift to working in training and organizational consulting, focusing on the challenges presented to people and organizations functioning in international environments. She has been working in this capacity through her own company since 2000, working for both profit and non-profit organizations. In addition to her work as a trainer and coach, Doris has been increasingly working as a facilitator of organizational change, which she primarily does using the method Open Space Technology.

Open Space Technology is an innovative form of meeting drawing out the creativity of the group involved and focussed on a systemic approach to problem solving that has a healing effect on an organization. A truly transcultural method, Doris has applied it in various situations, from working with refugees to working with organizations as they plan new strategies for the future.

You will find more information on Open Space Technology in the IBI Quarterly No. 3.
